A Home Where Everyone Helps
1. Every evening at seven, the Ben Salah family meet in the kitchen of their small flat in Sousse. Leila, the mother, is a nurse who often works night shifts at the regional hospital, so the family decided last year that the housework could no longer be her job alone. “At first, my husband thought that cooking was more difficult than repairing a car,” she laughs. “Now he makes the best couscous in the building.”
2. Each member of the family has a role. Karim, the father, does the shopping and prepares dinner twice a week. Fourteen-year-old Amira looks after her little brother Yassine after school and helps him with his homework. Yassine, who is eight, feeds the cat and lays the table. On Sundays, everyone cleans the flat together while their grandmother tells funny stories about her childhood in the village.
3. Amira admits that the new rules were not easy to accept. “In the beginning, I was angry because my friends had more free time than me,” she says. “But I have learnt to be more organised and responsible. Our home is calmer now, and we are closer than before.” Her mother agrees: “A family is like a team. When everyone gives a hand, nobody feels tired or alone.”

Writing
6 marksYour cousin Sami has sent you an email. He says that he often argues with his parents because they do not let him go out with his friends and they think he spends too much time on his phone.
Write a 10-line email to Sami in which you give him at least three pieces of advice to improve his relationship with his parents.
Do not write your name. Do not mention your school.
Answer elements · عناصر الإجابة
- Layout: greeting (Dear Sami,), short introduction (I’m sorry to hear…), body with the advice, closing formula (Best wishes / Take care,) + signature (Your cousin).
- Ideas: talk calmly to your parents and explain what you feel · respect the rules and come home on time so that they trust you · spend less time on your phone and share activities with them · introduce your friends to your parents.
- Useful language: you should / you shouldn’t, why don’t you…?, if you…, they will…, first, then, finally, because, so.
- Model: Dear Sami, I’m sorry to hear that you often argue with your parents. Don’t worry, this happens in many families. First, you should talk to them calmly and explain how you feel instead of shouting. Then, why don’t you invite your friends home? If your parents meet them, they will trust them more. You should also respect the time they give you and come home early. Finally, try to spend less time on your phone and do things with your family, like cooking or watching a film together. Remember that your parents love you and want to protect you. I hope things will get better soon. Take care, Your cousin.
